Butterfly valve: control and shut-off
A butterfly valve belongs to shut-off valves, that control and adjust the flow in pipe systems. You will find it, e.g., in water and waste-water systems, offshore and in the agricultural and fishing industry. In addition, you can also find models that are made in a 1-piece design.
Butterfly valves are most often made of either metal or plastic such as polypropylene, cast iron, stainless steel and bronze for marine applications. The design itself consists of a valve casing and a disc, usually located in the centre of the casing with a cast spindle. A seal, also called a liner, is placed between the valve casing and disc, which can be made of an elastomeric material such as NBR, EPDM, FKM or silicone.
To stop the flow, a handle is set for manual operation. By turning the valve a quarter turn, it goes from open to closed position or vice versa. In addition, the handle can also be pneumatically or electrically controlled for automatic operation.
So with a butterfly valve you can quickly block or allow flow. This is especially useful if you want to be able to shut off pipe systems with fluid that has moderate pressure and temperatures – it can be as high as 16 bar and 120°C. Another clear advantage is the simple design and the low weight. If you compare with valves such as ball valves and hose valves, the price is also often lower.
