Flow meters for single-use systems
Alflow sells a wide range of ultrasound-based, non-invasive flow meters and clamp-on transducers for fluid-bearing tubing systems in the pharmaceutical, pharma and bioprocess industries. The flow meters are used to monitor flow rates in bioprocess technology.
The function is based on the ultrasonic transit time method and has a non-invasive effect, which means that there is no direct contact with the medium, which makes it particularly suitable for processes with strict hygienic requirements. See the selection of flow meters for single-use systems from leading manufacturers on this site.
What are flow meters for single-use systems?
The flow meter system consists of a flow sensor, a Clamp-On transducer and an electronic evaluation system, the flow meter. In combination with the flow meter, the Clamp-On transducer ensures reliable monitoring of the volume flow rate in laboratories or industrial applications.
Innovative design combined with an established and reliable technology for monitoring volumetric flow in real time provides a truly compact and space-saving solution. Our flow meters can be used with all sizes of our non-invasive Clamp-On transducers, and it is also possible to change sensors and/or sensor sizes.
As mentioned, the operating principle is based on the ultrasonic transit-time method and is thus non-invasive and determines the transit-time difference of ultrasonic signals through a measuring section and is used to evaluate volumetric flow rates.
A typical transit-time flow-measurement system incorporates two piezo-ceramic plates that act as both ultrasonic transmitter and receiver. The flow measurement is performed by alternately sending and receiving an ultrasonic impulse between the two transducers and by measuring the transit-time difference that it takes the ultrasonic pulse to travel between them.
For higher accuracy, our Clamp-On transducers incorporate two pairs of ultrasonic transducers. They consist of four piezo-ceramic plates and are arranged in an X-configuration around the tube containing the measured flow.
When sending ultrasound signals through the measurement section, the difference in transit time depends on the flow direction of the medium. If the ultrasound signals are transmitted with the flow direction, the downstream signal needs less time, and if the ultrasound signals are transmitted against the flow direction, the upstream signal needs more time.
The evaluation of the received ultrasound signals is based on the upstream and downstream measuring sections, and the transit time difference is measured for each pulse. The difference between the upstream and downstream measurements is proportional to the volumetric flow rate.
Find the right flow meters for your single-use application
Our flow meters are made of materials that ensure you an extremely high level of cleanliness and thus the best conditions for your product. They are available in different variants with standard interfaces, which allow optimal integration in automated environments. They are available with 1, 2, 4 and 5-8 channels/outputs, respectively, and in an analogue version with 1-2 channels/outputs. The flow meters can be used in a wide range of applications within the medicinal, pharma and bioprocess industries, including:
- Flow measurement on disposable equipment
- Flow measurement on flexible pipes
- Addition of media to bioreactors
- Chromatographs, filtration, fillings, process evaluation, upscaling, research, etc.
- Flow monitoring during chromatography or laboratory-scale filtration
- Checking the upstream feed
- Fillings
- Evaluation and upscaling of processes
- Checking process equipment such as pumps or valves
- etc.
The use of sterile single-use components saves time and reduces the risk of cross-contamination, while increasing productivity between batches. The systems are manufactured with a focus on quality, and they can be quickly installed and operational in a fraction of the time required to install traditional stainless-steel systems used for pharmaceutical and biotechnological filling.
